For my career field research, I chose a nurse. Her name is Peggy Demers. She was a staff nurse/ change nurse at the Hospital of Central Connecticut for 28 years and 13 in their Dialysis unit. She said that some of the most interesting parts for her were all the different people that she helped and in all different ways. In the dialysis unit she helped people that had to have their blood filtered because their kidney would not do it themselves. One thing that she liked about the job was doing something little to help people in need. She told me that one of the some challenging parts of working the dialysis unit was the physical demand of it. She told me that she worked 13 hour shifts with being on her feet and moving around and moving the patients that needed help. It sometimes got emotional because the nurses there would meet and get to know the patients and sometimes on a personal level and when they passed it was sad. When she started in 1990 the salary for a nurse an hour was around $14.10 and after 28 years and being able to become a level 3 nurse she said the pay an hour was around $51.
Through my interview I learned that being a nurse is a lot more than just taking care of sick people. It is a lot of the way you can comfort them in the time of need. When asked about the skills that you need to become a nurse Peggy said it is physical because of all the moving around, having critical thinking to see what is going on and what to do under pressure, and having a heart to have the ability to talk and comfort the people you are taking care of. She said some of the benefits are to work where you want and have different shifts, be able to travel around and work in unique places, get to meet and work with a lot of different people and their specials, and be able to find what you want to do and what you're interested in.
This experience affects my career goals to becoming a nurse in the way that I want to be a nurse even more now. This did help with what is the good and some of the bad parts of being a nurse, but it also opened my eyes to wanting to help people and how I am able to do so. After high school I am going to go to a 4 year college. Through this I learn I would get more studies, but I think I am going to just go to a 4 year college and if I take more classes I think it will throw the place I am working at.
