Dear Mrs. Boutilier,
For my capstone project, I have decided to start tutoring math in middle school. I know there was a tutoring center for the high school students, but there was not one for the middle school students. I want the middle school to know that they can get help if they need it. What I will be doing is tutoring middle school students and helping them with math. I will be going down to the middle school and will be tutoring with the help of Ms. Gostanian. I will be going down to her classroom during Advisory on Tuesday and Thursday. I want to help the middle school students with their math weaknesses and not to fall behind in their math, and also I want to help them continue to build upon their strengths. One thing I want to accomplish this year is to help students with their math because math is a baseline for the rest of their lives, that is what I think it is important for them to have a good understanding. This is something that I am incredibly passionate about and dedicated to during my senior year.
My research question for this project is: Why do students struggle with the math process? I believe this question is something that everyone should be curious about because math is a life skill that everyone needs to have a good foundation. Students in school struggle with math a lot and there are certain factors that can and do come into play. Those can be their background, if they have gone for tutoring, and other factors too. The artifacts I will collect over the course of this project are pictures of me helping students that are struggling with math.
My mentor is going to be one of the amazing middle school teachers at SMSA, Grace Gostanian. Ms. Gostanian and I will work closely to try to improve the skills of the middle school students that need help with math. My stretch for this project will be time management. There is a lot to do in a short amount of time so being on a schedule with everything is my key towards this being successful.
Sincerely,
Patrick Libby
